A solar panel is made of photovoltaic (PV) cells — usually silicon — that generate a small electric current when sunlight strikes them. Many cells wired together make a panel; many panels wired together make an array. An inverter then converts the panel’s raw DC output into the AC electricity your home or business actually uses, and (for grid-tied systems) a net meter tracks how much you export back to the grid.
